BACKGROUND

In Q4 2019, AWS CEO Andy Jassy expressed concern that his global community of field sellers wasn’t demonstrating a core understanding of the services AWS provides its customers. The Worldwide Field Enablement organization was subsequently tasked with creating “Category Enablement” training that would address this problem by providing sales orgs three things:

  1. A shared understanding of AWS’s value proposition
  2. A basic understanding of cloud service categories such as AI/ML, databases, and migrations
  3. How to communicate to customers in a consistent voice approved by executive leadership.

However, despite being tasked with creating learning objectives on a strict monthly launch schedule, the scope of original content creation for each monthly course was not clearly defined. No other program existed previously that could be used as a benchmark, nor could it leverage existing tools or strategies.

Brandon was one of the first designers assigned, where he helped shape the UX strategy ranging from live-action video, animated graphics, and long-format podcast interviews. For the program’s first 13 installments, he translated scripts from written to visual presentations, recorded studio-grade voiceovers himself, and directed actors and studio vendors toward establishing the program’s introduction video module structure.

IMPACT

Prior to Brandon's involvement, the highest CSAT scores the organization achieved had ranged from 2.8-3.9. After Brandon’s contributions however, completion rate shot up 98% (4% improvement YOY) with CSAT scores of 4.3 (22% improvement YOY).

During Brandon’s 22-month tenure with the team, the program resulted in over $72M dollars in total closed business. Over 11,000 opportunities have been generated, resulting in a 21% increase since Q3 2020.

“There is no one I trust more than Brandon when it comes to video and creativity. He can take a script and turn it into something that belongs on a Netflix Documentary. He has done this in numerous projects and makes everyone around him better by sharing his knowledge.”

As a result of the bar-raising training experience, the SVP of Global Sales and Marketing increased investment in the program’s resources and brand identity. The program now called "LevelUp" grew to a dedicated headcount of 13 that continues to develop core AWS training to this today.

Brandon was instrumental in bringing forth a first of its kind video series with real-life sales scenarios. This customer conversation simulator was so engaging, it received an overwhelming response by our field sales teams and the launch was extended to over 50,000 Amazonians (an additional 25,000 employees over a standard launch). Due to its success, this style of real-life video scenarios quickly became the template for countless LevelUp series.
